The 10th matchday in the 2023 MLS season sees a battle atop the Eastern Conference with the first-place New England Revolution hosting second-place FC Cincinnati. The Revs are coming off a 2-1 victory over USL Championship side Hartford Athletic in the US Open Cup on Tuesday, representing the clubs second straight win. It’s been an excellent start to the season for Bruce Arena’s team who are even with their opponents today atop the East having won six of nine matches so far. Two first half goals were enough to secure New England a 2-1 home win over Sporting KC in their last MLS match and they’ll look to make it four in a row at Gillette Stadium with another three points here. The Revs have been excellent on their home soil, winning four and drawing once for a total of 13 points taken from a possible 15. They’ve also managed to score 11 goals while conceding only twice at home.
Cincinnati comes into this match in a strange position. They should feel excellent given the performance of the team which has them tied with New England at the top of the East but they are soon going to be without arguably their best player. Brazilian striker Brenner has recently completed a transfer to Italian club Udinese, with the 2019 expansion MLS team receiving one of the league’s biggest ever fees for the player. Brenner will remain with Cincinnati until the transfer window opens in July but it looks as if the 23-year-old will likely not feature again for his now former club. The loss is a huge blow to Cincy’s MLS Cup hopes as, along with Vazquez and Luciano Acosta, Cincinannti’s front three were one of the very best in the entire league. However, there is still plenty to be optimistic about as Pat Noonan’s side has stormed out of the gates, in large part due to their fantastic home form. Last season’s fifth-place finishing Eastern Conference team are a perfect five wins from five at home in the 2023 league campaign. Their last match was a 1-0 home win over Louisville City in the US Open Cup.
This should be a hugely entertaining fixture between the top-placed teams in the Eastern Conference. We lean towards the home side to get the three points here for a few reasons. The Revs have looked very strong when playing at Gillette Stadium so far this season and it’s clear that their home performances are going to play a major part in the team’s potential run for the Supporters’ Shield or the MLS Cup. Cincinnati, meanwhile, have shown some struggles when playing away from their own home field. With the likely absence of Brenner taking a serious amount of bite out of the Cincy attack, it will be tough for them to keep up with this in-form New England team.
